Temperatures, the organization said, were about two degrees higher than the previous record in the area more than a decade ago.
While the agency reported online that there were "illegal weather stations in the background" recording above 122 degrees Fahrenheit near Woodland Hills, it said Sunday's temperatures were the highest ever recorded at the official recording station in the region.
"This is also the highest temperature ever seen at the official recording station in Los Angeles County, or at the Los Angeles County warning area which includes San Luis Obispo County, Santa Barbara County, Ventura County and Los Angeles County," the service said. a report later on Sunday.
"Temperatures in Woodland Hills are likely to rise further, and some records will be broken today," the organization said in a statement.
The report comes just weeks after Death Valley reportedly recorded its highest temperature more than a hundred years after the NWS forecasting agency said Furnace Creek hit 130 degrees Fahrenheit. The rise came as the region was experiencing heat at the time.
